What happened
On 8 February 2023, a Tecnam P2008-JC, registration SP-WBA, was performing a routine flight at Rzeszów-Jasionka aerodrome (EPRZ). After completing a flight pattern, the pilot attempted a landing on runway 09. During the landing flare, the pilot executed the maneuver at an excessive height and low airspeed, intending to overshoot the touchdown point to reduce taxi time.
As the aircraft approached the runway, the pilot transitioned the flaps from the takeoff to the landing position. During the touchdown, the aircraft experienced a loss of lateral and directional control, causing the left wingtip to strike the runway. This impact caused the aircraft to veer off the runway at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the left. The aircraft traveled across the grass near the intersection of taxiway Bravo, moving roughly 700 meters before rejoining the runway near taxiway Charlie 1. Despite the excursion, the pilot continued to operate the engine and taxied the aircraft back to the apron.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation examined the aircraft's mechanical condition, weather conditions, air traffic control records, and the pilot's recent flight history. The investigation confirmed that the weather was favorable, with visual meteorological conditions and a light 10-knot headwind. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's qualifications and the response of the airport's rescue and firefighting services.
Findings
- The primary cause of the excursion was the loss of lateral and directional balance during touchdown.
- The pilot's recent three-month hiatus from flying contributed to a regression in piloting skills.
- The pilot's decision to flare at a high altitude and low speed, combined with the use of full flaps, made the aircraft highly susceptible to stalling and loss of control.
- The pilot failed to maintain lateral balance, likely due to focusing on a forward-shifted touchdown zone.
- The pilot's decision to continue taxiing at high speed after the excursion increased the risk of further structural damage or injury.
- No mechanical malfunctions or failures were found in the aircraft.
- The airport's rescue and firefighting services responded promptly and correctly to the incident.
