While returning to Rio Linda Airport (L36), the pilot configured the aircraft for a short field landing on runway 17. During this phase, the engine began to stutter and subsequently failed. Because the aircraft was at a low altitude and airspeed was decreasing, the pilot initiated a forced landing into a nearby field. During the landing maneuver, the aircraft struck a perimeter fence of a softball field and came to a stop in an upright position.
