Accident Overview
On July 13, 2024, at approximately 0749 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 182B, registration N2617G, was involved in an accident near Soldier, Idaho. Sequence of Events
The pilot reported departing Buhl Municipal Airport (U03), Buhl, Idaho, for a cross-country flight to Smiley Creek Airstrip (U87), Smiley Creek, Idaho. About 29 minutes into the flight over mountainous terrain, the engine began to run rough. The pilot checked the engine oil pressure and temperature gauges, both of which remained within normal operating parameters. Despite this, the engine roughness prompted the pilot to execute a 180° left turn toward U03.
During the turn, the pilot noticed that engine oil pressure had decreased below normal operating parameters, and the engine subsequently lost total power. The pilot initiated a forced landing to an open grass-covered field. During the landing roll, the airplane struck a ditch and nosed over.
Postaccident Examination
Postaccident examination revealed that the left wing lift strut was substantially damaged. The airplane was recovered to a secure location for further examination.
