What happened

On July 22, 2024, at approximately 12:12 CDT, a Lancair ES, registration N18BG, was destroyed following an accident near Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The flight was being operated under 14 CFR Part 91 for personal use. The aircraft had departed Trenton Mercer Airport (TTN) in New Jersey at 07:04 and subsequently flew to Hartford Municipal Airport (HXF) in Wisconsin, departing HXF at 11:45.

During the approach to runway 36L via the Fisk arrival, air traffic control instructed the pilot to widen a turn to provide spacing for an L-2CO and an L-39 aircraft landing ahead. The pilot acknowledged being "in sight" of the other aircraft and initiated a left turn. After receiving clearance to land on the "yellow dot" on runway 36L, the pilot acknowledged the instruction.

Shortly after, the aircraft impacted a soybean field south of Road N, approximately 1.5 miles from the approach end of runway 36L. A post-impact fire occurred, which destroyed the aircraft. The impact occurred on a heading of approximately 060°, and the aircraft came to rest on that same heading. The accident resulted in 2 fatal injuries involving the pilot and a pilot-rated passenger.
