What happened
On July 25, 2024, at approximately 12:25 EDT, a Cirrus Design Corp SR22, registration N990PT, crashed near Trenton, Maine. The aircraft was operating as a private flight under 14 CFR Part 91, traveling from Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU) in New Jersey to Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) in Maine.
During the approach to runway 22, the aircraft entered a steep, descending left turn before impacting the ground. The wreckage was located approximately 600 feet to the left of the approach end of the runway in a wooded area. A post-impact fire largely consumed the airframe. The pilot and passenger sustained 2 fatal injuries.
At the time of the accident, weather conditions at BHB were reported as IMC with a visibility of 1.5 miles in light rain and mist, and an overcast ceiling of 300 feet. A witness on the ground described the visibility as extremely poor due to thick fog.
