What happened

On October 18, 2024, a Cessna 150, registration N11519, was involved in an accident near Gainesville, Georgia. The flight departed from Gwinnett County Airport (LZU) in Lawrenceville, Georgia, at 1802 eastern daylight time, en route to Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport (GVL). The pilot did not file a flight plan or communicate with air traffic control during the flight.

After the pilot announced intentions to land at GVL on the common traffic advisory frequency, the passenger reported that the pilot had become unresponsive. The passenger assumed control of the aircraft, performing four low passes over the airport before landing on runway 5 at 1826.

Upon landing, the nose landing gear collapsed, causing the nose of the aircraft to impact the runway and slide. A small fire started near the forward section of the airplane, which witnesses extinguished. The pilot sustained 1 fatal injury, passing away on October 20, while the passenger was not injured.
