On 20 July 2025, a Savannah S ultralight (YR-5671) crashed shortly after takeoff near Gura Portiței, Romania. The pilot and passenger died; the aircraft was destroyed.

History of the Event

On 20 July 2025 at approximately 15:00 LT, two Savannah S aircraft, registered YR-5671 and YR-5554, departed from Sarinasuf airstrip for the Periteasca area. Each aircraft carried a pilot. The purpose of the flight was to provide technical assistance to a third aircraft (YR-5788), which had overturned in the Periteasca area, and to transport its pilot and passenger.

At 15:10 LT, both aircraft landed in the Periteasca area. The pilots disassembled the YR-5788 and loaded it for transport. At 19:05 LT, YR-5554 took off from a dirt road between the Perișor fish processing plant and the end of the Periteasca canal, carrying its pilot and one passenger. It flew normally to Sarinasuf airstrip and landed there.

YR-5671 took off from the same dirt road at around the same time, with its pilot and the pilot of YR-5788 as a passenger. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft crashed a short distance from the departure point. It struck the ground at approximately 19:20 LT at coordinates 44°46'40.4"N 029°09'40.6"E. Both occupants died. Witnesses at the scene alerted emergency medical services.

The aircraft was a Savannah S, serial number 20-08-54-0725, built in 2021 by S.C. ICP S.R.L. It was owned by S.C. MOA-AVIO S.R.L. and registered in Romania as YR-5671.

The pilot was a 51-year-old male holding a license for ultralight aircraft, with 214 hours of flying experience.

The accident occurred approximately 15.8 km northeast of the Gura Portiței pier, in Tulcea County, Romania. The aircraft was destroyed upon impact.
