What happened
On June 17, 2026, a SZD-48-1 Jantar Std. 2 glider with registration SP-3170 was conducting a towed flight in the vicinity of the EPRG (Rybnik/Gotartowice) aerodrome. At an altitude of approximately 520 meters above ground level, the cockpit canopy detached from the airframe. The pilot immediately aborted the flight and executed a safe landing at the home aerodrome without further incident. No injuries were reported to any persons involved. The detached canopy was recovered by police and subsequently returned to the local aeroclub.
The investigation
The Polish State Commission for Investigation of Aviation Accidents (PKBWL) reviewed the findings from the preliminary investigation conducted by the responsible entity. The commission assessed that the available evidence was sufficient to conclude the inquiry. The investigation focused on the mechanical integrity of the canopy attachment system and the pilot's actions during the flight.
Findings
The primary cause of the incident was identified as an accidental, inadvertent disengagement of the canopy lock lever by the pilot. This action caused the securing mechanism to loosen, resulting in the detachment and separation of the canopy from the fuselage. No other contributing factors were established.
