What happened

On March 22, 2026, at 17:16 Pacific daylight time, a Beech A36, registration N2882W, was involved in an accident near Olympic Valley, California. The aircraft was operating as a private cross-country flight under 14 CFR Part 91.

According to FAA ADS-B data, the flight departed Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) at 14:11, destined for Truckee-Tahoe Airport (TRK). While approximately 12 miles southwest of the accident site, the pilot contacted the Truckee air traffic control tower local controller to announce an inbound landing. During this communication, the pilot reported a turbocharger problem and expressed concern that the aircraft would not reach the airport. ADS-B tracking ended at an altitude of approximately 7,382 feet, roughly 13 miles southwest of TRK, with no further radio contact recorded.

Following an iPhone crash detection alert received by local law enforcement, a California Highway Patrol helicopter located the wreckage in the Granite Chief Wilderness. The aircraft was found partially submerged in a subalpine lake within the Five Lakes area at an altitude of 7,500 feet MSL.

The investigation

Examination of the wreckage showed the aircraft came to rest in a nose-down attitude near the shoreline. The first point of contact was the top of a pine tree located approximately 150 feet southwest of the main wreckage. The right wing struck a tree near its base and separated from the airframe. A post-crash fire was centered at the right wing and the tree. The engine and propeller assembly separated from the aircraft and were mostly submerged in the lake. All major structural components were recovered at the site.
