Fatal Ultralight Crash Near San Felipe, Chile

Casualties unknown • SECTOR PUTAENDO, CL

A single-engine Rans S-9 CHAOS ultralight aircraft crashed near the Victor Lafón Aerodrome, resulting in the death of the pilot.

What happened

On October 29, 2025, at approximately 17:05 local time, a pilot operating a Rans S-9 CHAOS ultralight aircraft departed from the Victor Lafón Aerodrome (SCSF) in San Felipe, Valparaíso Region, for a recreational flight. Shortly after takeoff, while flying over the 21 de Mayo sector, approximately 5.8 km northwest of the airfield, the aircraft lost altitude and struck the ground. The impact caused the aircraft to catch fire, resulting in the death of the pilot and the total destruction of the airframe.

The investigation

DGAC Chile investigators conducted a field inspection at the crash site, located on private property characterized by hard, dry earth and grass. The investigation found the aircraft resting in an inverted position with the nose pointing northeast. The wreckage showed extensive damage from the impact and subsequent fire, which consumed much of the fabric covering. The fuselage, wings, empennage, and engine were all identified, though heavily damaged by flames.

Technical examination of the engine, a Rotax 912 ULS, involved coordination with the manufacturer to assess its operational condition at the time of impact. Investigators also noted that the aircraft had undergone modifications to its fuel, cooling, and lubrication systems. Additionally, it was noted that the aircraft had been fueled with 97-octane automotive gasoline.

Findings

  • The aircraft struck the terrain in an inverted position.
  • The impact and subsequent fire caused significant structural damage, including fractures to the wing roots and the right wing support strut.
  • The aircraft was equipped with a Rotax 912 ULS engine, which the manufacturer strictly prohibits from being used for aerobatic maneuvers.
  • The aircraft's fuel tanks had been filled with automotive gasoline (97 octane) rather than aviation fuel.
