What happened
On 3 March 2022, at approximately 21:45 local time, a Boeing 737-800 operated by Ryanair, registration EI-DHH, was parked at stand 12 of Ibiza Airport (LEIB) following a flight from Barcelona. During the disembarkation process, passengers were exiting the aircraft via two routes: the rear door using an airport jetway, and the forward door using the aircraft's integrated retractable stairs.
While descending the built-in stairs at the front of the aircraft, a passenger fell from the final two steps onto the apron. The fall resulted in one serious injury. The passenger, who had a knee prosthesis, was immediately assisted by the cabin crew, who utilized an onboard wheelchair to stabilize the individual until emergency medical services arrived. The injured person was subsequently transported to a local hospital for specialist treatment.
The investigation
The CIAIAC investigation examined the sequence of events, the aircraft's equipment, and the safety measures in place. The investigation reviewed the technical specifications of the Boeing 737-800's retractable stairs, noting that these stairs feature narrower steps and lighter handrails compared to external airport-provided stairs. The investigators also reviewed the safety modifications previously implemented on the fleet, including non-slip materials on the treads, high-visibility barriers, and detachable handrail aids.
Furthermore, the commission evaluated the operator's disembarkation procedures and the effectiveness of the passenger announcements. The investigation also looked into the medical response provided by the airport and the regional emergency services to ensure the adequacy of the assistance provided to the injured party.
Findings
- The aircraft landed at Ibiza Airport at 21:30 and was positioned at stand 12.
- The accident occurred during the disembarkation phase at 21:45.
- The passenger fell from the last two steps of the forward built-in stairs.
- The investigation determined that the fall occurred by chance.
- There was no evidence that the passenger failed to comply with established safety instructions or that the crew failed to follow established procedures.
