What happened
On 9 May 2020, a Piper PA-38 aircraft with registration LY-ATM departed from Kyviškės aerodrome in Lithuania. Approximately at 11:25 UTC, while en route, the aircraft descended uncontrollably and impacted a field near Kena in the Vilnius district. The collision resulted in the total destruction of the airframe.
The investigation
The Safety Investigation Authority of the Republic of Lithuania (SIA) received notification of the occurrence on the same day, 9 May 2020, and immediately commenced a safety investigation. By 7 May 2021, the authority had issued an interim statement regarding the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Findings
The incident resulted in fatal injuries to all individuals on board. The aircraft was destroyed beyond repair. The specific causal factors contributing to the loss of control and subsequent impact were under active investigation at the time of the interim report.
