A privately owned Cessna 170B crashed into terrain shortly after departing Whitehorse International Airport, resulting in two fatalities.

What happened

On 27 May 2019, a Cessna 170B departed from the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport (CYXY) in the Yukon. The aircraft, which was privately owned, was carrying a pilot and one passenger on a flight destined for Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Alaska.

Shortly after the aircraft climbed from Runway 14R, it lost controlled flight. The aircraft subsequently struck the ground approximately 2000 feet south of the runway. A fire broke out following the impact, which destroyed the aircraft. Both occupants of the plane sustained fatal injuries.
