What happened
On 10 October 2021, a privately owned Daher TBM700 N, registered as C-FFYM, was performing an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight from Vernon Airport, British Columbia, to Westlock Aerodrome, Alberta. The flight plan included a scheduled stop at Calgary/Springbank Airport to collect passengers. At the time of the accident, the aircraft was carrying one pilot and three passengers.
While attempting to land on Runway 2cap 28 at Westlock Aerodrome, the aircraft bounced upon contact with the runway. In response to this bounce, the pilot initiated a go-around procedure. As engine power was applied to climb away, the aircraft rolled to the left and struck the runway in an inverted position, eventually coming to a stop on the south side of the runway.
Following the impact, the three passengers were able to exit the cabin through the main door with help from bystanders. The accident resulted in one serious injury and two minor injuries among the passengers. The pilot sustained serious injuries and remained trapped inside the cockpit for roughly two hours before rescuers could extract him from the wreckage. While the aircraft suffered significant damage, no fire occurred after the impact. An emergency locator transmitter signal was successfully detected by the search and rescue satellite system.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of events during the landing attempt and the subsequent go-around maneuver. Investigators examined the aircraft's behavior during the application of power and the cause of the left roll that led to the inverted impact.
