What happened
On 26 July 2025, a Quad City Challenger II advanced ultralight aircraft, configured with amphibious floats, departed from Winnipeg/Lyncrest Aerodrome in Manitoba. The aircraft was conducting a local flight under visual flight rules. During the flight, witnesses observed the aircraft pitching nose down before it struck the ground approximately 5 nautical miles east-northeast of the aerodrome. There was no fire reported following the impact. Emergency responders, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and local medical and fire services, attended the site. The pilot, who was the only person on board, sustained fatal injuries.
The investigation
Investigators have established that the aircraft was on its fourth flight since being constructed by its owner. The aircraft's configuration included amphibious floats for land and water use. The aircraft was also capable of carrying up to four mounted cameras for flight documentation. During the recovery process, the TSB recovered fragments of three cameras. While two of the memory cards were too damaged for immediate use and were sent to the TSB Engineering Laboratory, data from a third camera mounted on the wing was successfully retrieved. This footage contains a video recording of the accident.
