Introduction
On 25 August 2023, a Synergy Aviation Ltd. Robinson R44II helicopter was conducting external load work approximately 30 nautical miles east of Grand Cache, Alberta.
Details
While the helicopter was lifting off from an oil field site, the longline attached to the cargo hook snagged a railing associated with the oil field infrastructure. The snag caused the helicopter to become uncontrollable, and it subsequently collided with terrain, resulting in substantial damage to the aircraft.
Outcome
The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the helicopter, was seriously injured in the accident.
Investigation
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada conducted a class 4 investigation into the occurrence. Class 4 investigations are limited in scope and do not contain findings or recommendations. The investigation report was released on 4 March 2024.
