Occurrence Details
On 12 February 2024, a Bell 206L helicopter, operated by Hanley Heli Service Inc., was conducting an aerial survey in the western area of Lake Athabasca near Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. The pilot was the only person on board.
Flight and Weather
While flying over the lake, the pilot encountered an abrupt change in weather that resulted in low visibility conditions. He attempted to return to the Fort Chipewyan Airport but was unable to land. The pilot then turned back south over the lake.
Accident Sequence
Shortly after turning south, the helicopter struck the frozen surface of Lake Athabasca. The impact activated the emergency locator transmitter. Search and rescue operations were immediately initiated, and the helicopter was eventually located approximately 4 nautical miles east-southeast of the airport.
Investigation
The TSB is investigating the accident. There was no post-impact fire. The pilot sustained fatal injuries. The investigation will analyze safety issues related to this occurrence.
