What happened
On 15 August 2025, an Airbus Helicopters AS350 B3 was performing aerial fire suppression duties near Fivefinger Lake, Nova Scotia. The aircraft, operated by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, had just completed a water bucket refill from the lake. Shortly after lifting off, while maintaining an altitude of roughly 75 feet above the water, the pilot experienced a loud bang followed by a loss of power. This resulted in the helicopter striking the surface of the lake, where it became partially submerged. The pilot sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization.
The investigation
The TSB is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the engine failure and subsequent impact.
