What happened
On 23 May 2014, a Cessna 182T, registration N2231F, was completing a private flight from Perth Aerodrome to Tiree Airport. During the approach to Runway 05, the pilot was operating in fine weather conditions with surface winds recorded at 20 kt from 020º.
As the aircraft entered the flare phase of the landing, it experienced a significant rightward yaw of approximately 45º. Unable to recover from this swing, the pilot initiated a go-around procedure. While attempting to climb, the aircraft drifted right of the runway centerline. The nose landing gear subsequently struck a boundary fence, causing the structure to partially detach from its supports. The aircraft then proceeded to land on uneven terrain beyond the fence line, resulting in a nose-over. There were no injuries to the two occupants.
The investigation
The investigation examined the sequence of the landing attempt and the subsequent impact with the airfield perimeter. The AAIB established that the aircraft sustained damage to the engine, propeller, nosewheel, and the boundary fence. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's flight experience and the environmental conditions at the time of the incident.
