Accident Overview

On 23 June 2018, at 1630 hours UTC, a Vans RV-8 (registration G-JBTR) operated by a private pilot experienced a runway excursion during landing at Perth Airport. The aircraft was manufactured in 2012 and powered by a single Lycoming IO-360-M1B piston engine. The pilot, aged 56, held a Private Pilot’s Licence with 428 total flying hours, including 60 on type.

Sequence of Events

The pilot executed a landing in what was described as “almost” a three-point attitude, with a right crosswind estimated at 5 knots. The aircraft touched down with a slight drift to the right but initially tracked straight, all three wheels on the asphalt runway. Two to three seconds after touchdown, a tyre squeal was heard, and the aircraft turned sharply to the right, departing the runway despite the pilot’s attempts to correct using rudder and wheelbrakes.

While sliding sideways at about 40 knots groundspeed, the left main landing gear collapsed as the aircraft left the paved surface. This caused the left wing and propeller to strike the ground. The aircraft came to rest on a northerly heading, and both occupants (crew and one passenger) exited without difficulty. No injuries were reported.
