Accident Overview
On 13 September 2024, at approximately 08:56 a.m., a student pilot operating a Cessna 172S aircraft, registration HS-BCD, was conducting a solo training flight at Nakhon Ratchasima Airport, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The flight involved practicing touch-and-go landings on runway 24.
Sequence of Events
During the fourth landing, on final approach, the engine speed was approximately 1,600 RPM and the airspeed was 65–70 knots. Prior to touchdown, the student pilot reported a relatively high rate of descent and increased the flare to reduce touchdown impact. Upon touchdown, the student pilot noticed a tail strike and decided to execute a go-around. The student pilot applied full throttle and pulled the control column backwards without monitoring airspeed. This caused the aircraft’s nose to pitch up excessively, leading to a loss of lift (stall). The aircraft veered to the left, and the left wing collided with the ground on the left side of the runway. The nose then impacted the ground, and the engine subsequently stopped. The aircraft rotated opposite the approach path, and the right wing contacted the runway before coming to rest on a grass surface approximately 582 metres from the runway 24 threshold, on a bearing of 237 degrees, with its heading at 040 degrees.
Damage and Injuries
The aircraft sustained substantial damage. The student pilot was not injured.
Investigation Status
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee for the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Commission Thailand is conducting the investigation. The final report will be published along with the accident cause. The committee will recommend preventive measures to domestic and international aviation authorities. If circumstances requiring immediate action are discovered, necessary measures will be taken. An interim report was released in September 2025.
