A training flight involving a Cessna-152 ended in a fatal crash near the runway edge after an unauthorized low-altitude maneuver.

What happened

On 01 April 2015, a Cessna-152 operated by Flying Academy & General Aviation Ltd. was conducting a routine training flight at Shah Makhdum Airport in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The crew consisted of an instructor pilot and a trainee pilot performing post-solo training.

During the flight, the instructor attempted to demonstrate a practice forced landing (PFL) from a very low altitude and a close downwind position. Following takeoff, the aircraft performed an early right turn toward the opposite runway. Due to the insufficient altitude and the proximity of the downwind position, the aircraft was unable to complete the reciprocal turn safely. The aircraft struck the ground adjacent to the runway edge, resulting in the aircraft disintegrating and catching fire immediately upon impact.

The accident resulted in one fatality and one serious injury. The trainee pilot died at the scene due to the impact and subsequent fire. The instructor pilot sustained severe burns and, despite being evacuated to a hospital in Dhaka, succumbed to his injuries 4/3 days later.

The primary cause of the accident was an unauthorized flight exercise involving a practice forced landing performed at an unsafe altitude and from an excessively close downwind position.
