What happened
On 18 November 2022, a DR40_120 aircraft, registered F-GBUY, was performing a local flight at Couhé-Vérac aerodrome when it collided with chestnut trees during the final approach. The pilot and one passenger were fatally injured, and the aircraft was destroyed.
The flight began at 15:30, initially intended as a cross-country trip, but the pilot diverted back to the departure aerodrome due to deteriorating weather. As the aircraft joined the left-hand circuit for runway 20, a heavy rain shower moved over the airfield. During the final approach, the aircraft's path became misaligned with the runway centerline. The aircraft struck a row of trees located approximately 50 meters to the right of the runway edge, impacting the vegetation with high kinetic energy.
The investigation
The investigation examined the aircraft's maintenance records, which showed no mechanical issues, and confirmed the engine was functioning normally prior to impact. The aircraft's weight and balance were within limits, and there was sufficient fuel for the flight.
Investigators analyzed the aerodrome environment, noting that the grass runway provided very little contrast with the surrounding green fields. Furthermore, while recent work had been done to restore runway markings, the use of
