What happened
During a scheduled delivery mission traveling from Croydon to Reykjavik, an aircraft was navigating a route that included stops in Liverpool and Prestwick. While the flight was approaching Liverpool from an easterly direction, the pilot encountered severe weather conditions. These environmental factors led to a loss of spatial orientation during the approach.
While operating in low visibility, the twin engine aircraft struck the terrain at Crow Stone Edge, situated southwest of Sheffield within the Peak District National Park. The impact caused the airframe to disintegrate. There were three fatalities among the occupants, which included the pilot, a wireless operator, and one passenger.
Findings
- The flight was operating under conditions of poor visibility.
- The crew experienced a loss of orientation due to adverse weather.
