What happened
During an arrival at Asmara Airport on runway 25, the aircraft experienced a malfunction related to the braking system immediately after making contact with the runway. Due to the failure to decelerate effectively, the crew was unable to halt the aircraft within the available runway length. This led to a runway excursion where the aircraft overran the paved surface and struck the approach lighting system.
Following the collision, the aircraft came to a stop on the airfield. Despite the impact with the lights, all seven occupants of the aircraft managed to evacuate the wreckage without sustaining any injuries. The aircraft, which sustained significant structural damage, was determined to be a total loss.
Findings
At the time of the incident, meteorological conditions indicated a wind speed of 10 knots originating from 170 degrees. The primary factor in the excursion was the inability to maintain stopping distance due to braking problems encountered during the landing roll.
