Aircraft overrun during landing

No fatalities • Petrel-Burevestnik (Iturup Island, Kuril Islands), Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

A four-engine aircraft failed to stop on the runway during landing, resulting in an overrun and significant damage to the airframe.

What happened

During the landing phase of the flight, a four-engine aircraft encountered difficulties decelerating on the runway. The aircraft was unable to come to a halt within the available runway length, leading to an excursion from the paved surface. As the aircraft overran the runway, the landing gear was lost. The aircraft eventually came to a stop approximately 200 metres beyond the end of the runway.

Findings

There were no fatalities or injuries reported as a result of the incident. However, the aircraft sustained extensive damage during the overrun and the loss of its undercarriage, rendering the airframe damaged beyond repair.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the runway, leading to a runway excursion.
