What happened
During a humanitarian mission operated for Médecins Sans Frontières, a four-engine airplane experienced a runway excursion upon arrival at Kisangani. The flight was intended to deliver aid as part of the organization's medical relief efforts.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the crew was unable to decelerate the plane within the available runway length. This resulted in the aircraft overrunning the end of the paved surface. Following the overrun, the aircraft came to a stop and subsequently ignited, leading to a significant post-crash fire.
Despite the intensity of the fire, all seven crew members successfully evacuated the aircraft. There were zero fatalities and zero injuries reported following the incident. However, the impact and subsequent flames resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.
Findings
- The aircraft failed to stop within the remaining runway distance after touchdown.
- The post-landing fire led to the complete loss of the airframe.
