What happened
A special cargo flight traveling from Dire Dawa to Mogadishu ended in a fatal accident upon arrival. The four-engine aircraft was transporting ammunition and weapons intended for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) at the time of the incident.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, it began to skid, eventually overrunning the paved surface. The momentum caused the plane to strike a perimeter wall, which triggered a massive fire. The intensity of the post-impact blaze was exacerbated by the onboard munitions, which led to several secondary explosions. The impact and subsequent fire resulted in the total destruction of the airframe.
Findings
The accident resulted in four fatalities among the crew members, while the remaining two crew members sustained serious injuries. The destruction of the aircraft was driven by the impact with the perimeter wall and the subsequent ignition of the cargo.
