Cargo Aircraft Destroyed After Hard Landing at Shindand Air Base (EK-12112)

Incident Overview and Cargo Details A four-engine cargo aircraft was completing a flight to Shindand Air Force Base when it made a hard landing and bounced. The aircraft was carrying a load of 4,700 pounds of voting documents intended for U.S. soldiers based at Shindand Air Force Base. ## Runway Excursion and Damage For unknown reasons, the aircraft landed hard and bounced. On the second touchdown, the left main landing gear was torn off. The aircraft then slid for approximately 1,750 meters before veering off the runway to the left and coming to rest in a drainage ditch. ## Casualties and Aircraft Status All six occupants escaped the incident uninjured. The aircraft was destroyed by the impact and a post-impact fire. ## Official Notice The U.S. Federal Voting Assistance Program published a notice on 24 October 2012, informing that the mail consisted of voting documents for U.S. soldiers covering the U.S. Presidential Election of 6 November 2012.
