Single-engine aircraft crash near Dovyren

2 fatalities • Dovyren, Russia • Flight

A cargo flight operating between Nizhneangarsk Airport and Dovyren crashed in a mountainous region, resulting in the deaths of both crew members.

What happened

A cargo mission carrying six drums of diesel departed from Nizhneangarsk Airport at 08:43 local time. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported that the single-engine airplane was climbing to an altitude of 1,200 meters under favorable weather conditions. Approximately twelve minutes into the flight, the aircraft was ascending normally; however, ten minutes later, the plane went down in a mountainous area situated roughly 7 to 10 km from its destination, Dovyren.

Following the failure of the aircraft to reach Dovyren, search and rescue operations were initiated. The wreckage was located one day after the disappearance. The accident resulted in two fatalities, as both crew members perished in the crash.

Findings

Investigations into the accident revealed that a propeller blade failed during flight. This mechanical failure caused the blade to strike and shatter the cockpit windshield. Although the initial departure occurred in good weather, subsequent visibility was significantly reduced by snowfall. Due to the propeller blade failure and the difficulty of navigating mountainous terrain in low visibility, the crew was unable to execute an emergency landing.

Probable cause

A manufacturing defect caused a propeller blade to fail, leading to windshield damage and preventing an emergency landing in poor visibility.
