What happened
During the approach phase to Kostanay-Narimanovka Airport, the crew of the aircraft experienced a malfunction involving the left engine. This failure necessitated the shutdown of the engine and the feathering of its propeller while the plane was at an altitude of approximately 400 metres and roughly 12 km from the destination. The crew did not notify air traffic control regarding the mechanical issue and proceeded with the approach.
While on final approach, air traffic control instructed the crew to perform a go-around. As the crew applied increased power to the remaining right engine to execute the maneuver, the aircraft lost altitude. The plane impacted the ground 162 metres from the runway threshold and 477 metres to the left of the extended centerline. Following the impact, the aircraft slid several dozen metres toward the apron, where it struck a stationary Antonov AN-24.
Despite the severity of the impact, all 23 occupants of the aircraft managed to evacuate without injury. However, both the aircraft involved in the collision and the parked Antonov AN-24 sustained damage that rendered them beyond repair.
Findings
- The crew failed to communicate the engine failure and propeller feathering to air traffic controllers.
- The failure to notify ATC of the engine malfunction and the subsequent loss of altitude during the go-around maneuver led to the crash.
