Runway excursion at Rogachevo Air Base

No fatalities • Rogachevo AFB, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft overran the runway at Rogachevo AFB during landing, resulting in structural damage but no injuries to the occupants.

What happened

During the landing phase at Rogachevo AFB (Anderma-2), the aircraft was operating on runway 16 when it experienced issues maintaining deceleration. The aircraft failed to come to a complete stop within the available runway length, leading to a runway excursion. As the aircraft overran the pavement, the left main landing gear was lost. The vehicle eventually came to a halt approximately 8 metres beyond the end of the runway.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
  • All 39 occupants successfully evacuated the aircraft without sustaining any injuries.
  • The primary factor in the excursion was the inability to stop within the remaining runway distance.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently to remain on the runway during landing.
