What happened
During a night-time descent toward Košice-Barca Airport, a military transport aircraft belonging to the Slovak Air Force (Letectva a Protivzdu Obrany-snej Slovenskej) struck trees and crashed in a heavily wooded, snow-covered region near the Hungarian village of Telkibánya. The aircraft was performing a return flight from Pristina, transporting personnel associated with the KFOR contingent, including 28 Slovak Army soldiers, 7 logisticians, and 8 crew members.
The wreckage was located approximately 20 km southeast of the threshold for runway 01. The impact and a subsequent fire destroyed the aircraft. Of the occupants on board, 42 fatalities were recorded, while one passenger sustained serious injuries.
Findings
At the time of the accident, meteorological conditions were reported as favorable, with a visibility of 10 km and a cloud ceiling of 5,000 feet. The aircraft collided with trees during its approach to the destination.
