An aircraft flying over the Luhansk region was struck by a surface-to-air missile, resulting in a crash near the Russian border and several casualties among the crew.

What happened

While operating at an altitude of approximately 6,500 metres, an aircraft traveling over the Luhansk oblast was struck by a surface-to-air missile. Following the impact, the aircraft lost stability and entered an uncontrolled descent. The flight ended when the plane crashed into an open field situated in Izvaryne, in close proximity to the Russian border.

During the descent, all eight members of the crew managed to bail out of the aircraft. The aftermath of the incident resulted in a total of two fatalities and four uninjured crew members. Additionally, two crew members were captured and held as prisoners by pro-Russian separatist forces.

Investigations into the incident indicate that the primary cause of the crash was the impact from a surface-to-air missile while the aircraft was in flight.
