Runway Overrun Leads to Nose Gear Collapse During Landing in Somalia (EK-26818)

Accident

The aircraft was conducting a special flight from Mogadishu to Guriceel, carrying five crew members and 45 passengers. Among the passengers was Hussein Ali Wehliye, the newly appointed governor of the Galguduud Province. The flight was uneventful until landing. The aircraft touched down too far along the runway and could not stop within the remaining distance. It overran the runway and struck a rock. The impact caused the nose landing gear to collapse and penetrate the cockpit floor. One crew member sustained injuries. The remaining 49 occupants evacuated without injury. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.

Probable Cause

According to the official investigation, the likely cause was a wrong approach configuration resulting in the aircraft landing too far down the runway. This reduced the available landing distance, preventing the aircraft from stopping safely. The report noted that the landing maneuver was missed and recommended that the crew should have initiated a go-around. Additionally, it was reported that the aircraft's Certificate of Airworthiness had expired on 31 May 2012, and the aircraft had been removed from the Armenian register on 26 October 2012.
