What happened
During a cargo operation departing from Goma Airport destined for Bunia, the flight crew identified mechanical difficulties involving the right engine. Following this report of technical malfunctions, air traffic control authorized the aircraft to perform an emergency return to the departure airfield.
Upon attempting the emergency landing, the aircraft type (unspecified) failed to stop within the runway limits, coming to rest approximately halfway down the strip. During the overrun, the aircraft made contact with the ground, which caused the collapse of both the nose gear and the right main landing gear. The impact resulted in structural damage, specifically a bent right wing. Despite the intensity of the excursion, all four crew members were able to evacuate the plane without injury.
Findings
- The crew experienced technical issues with the right engine shortly after takeoff.
- The aircraft overran the runway due to an inability to decelerate within the available distance after touchdown.
