What happened
During a repositioning mission intended to support geological operations, an aircraft departed from Bodaybo with plans to stop at Perevoz before reaching its final destination of Kedrovy. While attempting to land, the crew encountered a tailwind during their approach.
The aircraft touched down significantly past the intended touchdown point, approximately 80 meters beyond the threshold of the landing area. Due to the insufficient remaining runway length, the pilot was unable to bring the plane to a halt before exiting the paved surface. The aircraft subsequently overran the strip and struck an earthen embankment. The impact triggered a fire that consumed the entire vehicle. Although the aircraft was destroyed, both pilots managed to evacuate the wreckage without sustaining any injuries.
Findings
Investigations into the accident determined that the primary factor was an incorrect approach configuration by the flight crew. Specifically, the crew failed to execute a go-around maneuver despite the unfavorable landing conditions and the extended touchdown point.
