What happened
During the final approach to Xieng Khouang Airport, the aircraft descended to an altitude that was too low for the terrain. The plane struck trees in a heavily forested region situated approximately 1,500 meters before reaching the runway. The impact caused the aircraft to burst into flames, leading to the destruction of the airframe.
Initially, the accident resulted in 14 fatalities and 3 injuries. Among those injured was a nurse. However, the death toll later rose as two of the survivors succumbed to their injuries, leaving the nurse as the sole survivor of the crash. The passengers included several high-ranking members of the Laotian government who were traveling to the airport to participate in a ceremony marking the creation of the 2nd Division of the Laotian Army.
Findings
Investigations into the crash indicated that the aircraft was operating at an insufficient altitude during its approach to the airport. The specific reason for this low descent remains undetermined.
