Incident Overview
On 11 March 2024, a Boeing 787-9 passenger aircraft, registered CC-BGG, operated by LATAM Airlines, was flying from Sydney, Australia, to Auckland, New Zealand. Approximately 250 nautical miles from Auckland, the aircraft encountered a 'technical problem' that resulted in a 'strong movement'. As a consequence, around 50 individuals, including both passengers and cabin crew, sustained injuries. The aircraft subsequently landed safely in Auckland, with no fatalities reported.
Investigation
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) of New Zealand provided support to the Chilean Investigation Authority, the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC), which led the investigation into the incident. TAIC opened an inquiry for administrative purposes, acting as an Accredited Representative under ICAO Annex 13 provisions for an overseas counterpart’s investigation. In March 2026, with confirmation that assistance was no longer required, the Commission concluded its inquiry.
