What happened
During a flight approaching Moorabbin Airport, the VH-EWE, a EWE aircraft, suffered a sudden reduction in engine power while on final approach. Following the power loss, the pilot issued a MAYDAY distress call to communicate the emergency. Shortly after this transmission, the aircraft experienced a loss of control, leading to a collision with the terrain.
The investigation
Investigators focused their analysis on the sequence of events surrounding the engine failure and the subsequent inability to maintain control of the aircraft. The investigation sought to determine the specific mechanical or operational factors that triggered the loss of power and why the aircraft subsequently impacted the ground.
