Ambulance aircraft crash near Wünstorf Airbase

2 fatalities • Dahlhausen, Germany • Flight

A twin-engine medical transport aircraft crashed into a forested area during an emergency descent following an engine failure.

What happened

A medical evacuation flight traveling from Wünstorf Airbase toward Düsseldorf experienced a critical mechanical failure while in transit. The twin engine aircraft was transporting two pilots and two doctors when the right engine developed an oil leak during its cruise at 4,000 feet. In response to the leak, the crew deactivated the affected engine.

Following the engine shutdown, the flight crew found it impossible to sustain a safe cruising altitude. The captain initiated an emergency landing procedure to reach the ground safely. As the aircraft descended through the final layer of cloud cover, the flight path led directly into a dense wooded area. The aircraft subsequently collided with trees and crashed within the forest.

The accident resulted in two fatalities among the passengers, specifically both doctors on board. The two pilots survived the impact but sustained injuries during the crash.

Probable cause

An oil leak caused the failure of the right engine during flight.
