A military training flight departing from RAF Kinloss crashed into a hillside during deteriorating weather conditions, resulting in no survivors.

What happened

A routine three-hour training mission operating out of RAF Kinloss ended in a fatal accident when the aircraft impacted the summit of Creag Bhan. Shortly after the departure, the flight encountered increasingly severe meteorological conditions, including fog, low cloud cover, turbulence, and icing.

While maintaining a low-altitude cruise, the aircraft collided with the top of the hill. The impact caused the airframe to disintegrate upon contact with the terrain. There were no survivors among the 13 fatalities recorded on board the aircraft.

Findings

Investigations into the accident focused on the environmental conditions present during the flight. It was determined that the primary factor in the loss of control was the excessive accumulation of ice on the wings and the fuselage of the airplane.

Probable cause

The aircraft lost control due to heavy ice buildup on the airframe surfaces.
