Runway excursion involving aircraft at San Pedro Sula Airport

No fatalities • San Pedro Sula, Honduras • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft operating from Roatán veered off the runway during landing at San Pedro Sula Airport, resulting in significant damage but no injuries.

What happened

During an arrival from Roatán, the crew initiated an approach toward Runway 04 at San Pedro Sula Airport. The flight proceeded without incident until the aircraft made contact with the runway surface. Immediately following touchdown, the pilot attempted to use the brakes, at which point the aircraft experienced a loss of directional control.

As a result of these controllability issues, the aircraft type veered toward the left side of the runway. The movement carried the plane through a grassy section adjacent to the paved surface, where the landing gear was subsequently lost. The sequence ended when the aircraft came to a stop with its nose embedded in a drainage ditch situated approximately 40 metres from the runway centerline.

Findings

  • All 19 occupants on board managed to exit the aircraft without sustaining any injuries.
  • The aircraft sustained damage that was classified as beyond repair.
  • The primary factor in the excursion was the loss of controllability following the application of brakes after touchdown.

Probable cause

The aircraft experienced a loss of directional control after the pilot applied brakes following touchdown on the runway.
