What happened
On the evening of January 27, 2001, a Raytheon (Beechcraft) Super King Air 200, registration N81PF, crashed into hilly terrain in the vicinity of Strasburg, Colorado. The aircraft, operated by Jet Express Services for North Bay Charter, LLC, was performing an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight under Part 9im regulations. The flight had departed from Jefferson County Airport in Broomfield, Colorado, at approximately 17:18 MST.
The aircraft was part of a three-plane convoy transporting members of the Oklahoma State University basketball team and their staff. The group was traveling to Stillwater Regional Airport in Oklahoma following a game held at the University of Colorado at Boulder. On board the aircraft were two pilots and eight passengers. Upon impact with the ground, the aircraft was destroyed by the force of the collision and a subsequent fire. There were 10 fatalities and no survivors.
Findings
At the time of the accident, the aircraft was operating within instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The flight crew consisted of a pilot in the left seat who held primary responsibility for the operation, and a second individual in the right seat who was not a required crewmember for this flight type.
