What happened
On October 24, 2004, a Beech King Air 200, registered as N501RH, crashed into a mountainous area in Stuart, Virginia. The aircraft, which was being operated by Hendrick Motorsports, Inc., was traveling to Martinsville/Blue Ridge Airport (MTV) to transport several passengers and crew members to an upcoming automobile race.
While executing a missed approach at the airport, the aircraft struck the terrain. The impact and a subsequent fire caused the total destruction of the plane. The accident resulted in ten fatalities, consisting of the two crewmembers and eight passengers on board.
Findings
At the time of the accident, the flight was being conducted under instrument flight rules (IFR) according to 14 CFR Part 91. The aircraft was operating within instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) during the sequence of events leading to the crash.
