Runway excursion involving twin-engine aircraft

No fatalities • Touba, Ivory Coast • Landing (descent or approach)

A twin-engine aircraft veered off the runway after an improper approach led to a landing too far down the runway.

What happened

During an approach to runway 23, the crew of a twin-engine aircraft failed to properly configure the plane for landing. This error resulted in the aircraft touching down significantly further down the 1,600-meter runway than intended. Upon realizing that the remaining runway length was insufficient to bring the plane to a safe stop, the crew maneuvered the aircraft off the paved surface.

The aircraft exited the runway and traveled onto an adjacent grassy area, where it eventually came to a halt. Despite the impact, all 12 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury. The aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond repair.

Findings

  • The primary factor leading to the excursion was an incorrect approach configuration.
  • The landing distance required exceeded the available runway length due to the late touchdown point.

Probable cause

An improper approach configuration caused the aircraft to touch down too far down the runway, leaving insufficient distance for a safe stop.
