What happened
On a scheduled instrument flight rules service between Val-d’Or and Chibougamau/Chapais, Quebec, a Beechcraft A100, registered as C-FNIF, was performing an approach to Runway 05. The flight, operated by Air Creebec Inc., initially attempted a non-precision approach but was forced to execute a go-around.
During the subsequent second approach, the aircraft descended through the cloud layer while positioned to the left of the runway centerline. In an attempt to realign with the runway, the crew performed a right turn followed by a sharp left turn. During this maneuver, the aircraft impacted the runway approximately 500 feet before the threshold. The impact triggered a fire that caused the aircraft to travel an additional 400 feet, eventually coming to a rest 50 feet north of the runway surface.
Emergency services from Chibougamau and Chapais arrived at the site at approximately 09:26 EDT, roughly 26 minutes after the accident. Although responders attempted to suppress the flames with portable extinguishers, the fire remained uncontrolled and the aircraft was completely destroyed. There were two fatalities among the crew.
Findings
Investigation details indicate that the aircraft descended below the cloud cover while off the runway centerline, leading to a sequence of steep turns that resulted in the runway impact.
