A single-engine aircraft crashed into the Matsieng Flying Club building and control tower during low-level maneuvers, resulting in one fatality.

What happened

During the afternoon, the pilot of the aircraft was present at a private event hosted by the Matsieng Flying Club at Matsieng Aerodrome. Following a series of low-altitude maneuvers, the aircraft approached the airfield from the direction of Sir Seretse Khama Airport. At approximately 2015LT, the aircraft performed several low-level flypasts from various directions over the club's facilities, which were situated near the Air Traffic Control tower. These maneuvers prompted an immediate evacuation of the premises.

During a final, extremely low-altitude pass along runway 36, the aircraft struck the Matsieng Flying Club building at ground level. The collision caused the destruction of both the club facility and the Air Traffic Control tower. A fire following the impact consumed 13 parked vehicles. Emergency responders from the Kgatleng District Council arrived shortly after the crash to manage the fire and provide assistance. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was killed in the accident.

Findings

Reports indicate that the pilot may have been involved in a domestic dispute prior to the flight. Furthermore, it is believed that the pilot was operating the aircraft without authorization.
