What happened
During a ferry flight originating from Baltimore, a Southwind 853A was performing its approach to Grand Rapids-Gerald R. Ford Airport. While nearing the destination, the twin-engine aircraft began an uncontrolled descent. The plane struck an open field in Hastings, situated approximately 18.5 miles southeast of the airport.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe, with wreckage distributed across a large area. There were four fatalities among the occupants of the aircraft; no survivors were reported.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified an in-flight fire or explosion occurring during the approach phase as a primary factor. This event led to the failure of the aircraft's pressurization, heating, and air conditioning systems, triggering the subsequent loss of control.
Several contributing elements were noted in the official report:
- A fire originated within the wheel well, affecting the brakes and wheel assembly
- Structural or material failure occurred during flight
- The cockpit became filled with smoke
- Maintenance deficiencies were present, including a lack of proper inspections or overhauls for the heating system
- There was no documentation in the aircraft logbooks regarding the operation or maintenance of the heater
- Fatigue was noted regarding the pilot
