Accident Details
While making an approach to Kahului Airport, a twin-engine aircraft encountered poor weather conditions. The aircraft subsequently struck the side of a mountain located a short distance from the airport. The impact completely destroyed the aircraft. Both persons aboard the aircraft died. The wreckage was located the following day in a remote area that was not easily accessible.
Investigation
The official investigation into the accident examined the circumstances of the flight and the condition of the wreckage. The investigation determined that the pilot had become disoriented while flying in instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions. The reason for this disorientation could not be ascertained.
Probable Cause
The probable cause was identified as the pilot's disorientation in IFR conditions for an unknown reason. The airplane remained under control until the moment of impact.
